Doxepin Overview

Doxepin (Sinequan) is used to treat depression or anxiety associated with alcoholism, psychiatric conditions, or manic-depressive conditions. This medication is a tricyclic Antidepressant that affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced. Doxepin (Sinequan or other generic name) is used to treat symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. Doxepin may also be used for other purposes not listed here. This medication is used to treat mental/mood problems such as depression and anxiety.

Dozepin can help improve mood and feelings of well-being, relieve anxiety and tension, help you sleep better, and increase your energy level. This medication belongs to a class of medications called tricyclic Antidepressants. It works by affecting the balance of certain natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

Medical Uses of Doxepin

If you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days, such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine then do not take this medication. Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Stay alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor. You must always keep on your mind to not share or give this medicine to anyone under 18 years old without the advice of a doctor. Doxepin is not approved for use in children.

Before taking any medecine you must always Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking Doxepin and each time you get a refill. In case of any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Doxepin is always taking  by mouth, usually 1 to 3 times daily or as directed by your doctor. If you take it only once a day, take it at bedtime to reduce daytime sleepiness. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

To reduce your risk of side effects (such as drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness), your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

Side Effects

As side effects of Doxepin we have: drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, or trouble urinating may occur, Abdominal or stomach pain, agitation, black, tarry stools, bleeding gums, blood in the urine or stools, blurred vision, burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, “pins and needles”, or tingling feelings. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Along with its needed effects, Doxepin may cause some unwanted effects.

Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. And to reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. If you want to relieve dry mouth, you can suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water, or use a saliva substitute. And in order to prevent constipation, eat dietary fiber, drink enough water, and exercise. You may also need to take a laxative. The most important thing to do is to ask your doctor or pharmacist which type of laxative is right for you.


In case of overdose and a serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, give or take naloxone if available, then dial police or emmergencies’ number. If the person is awake and has no symptoms, call a poison control center right away.
