Hydromorphone ER

Hydromorphone oral liquid and tablets, also known as dihydromorphinone are used to relieve pain. People use Hydromorphone ER capsules and tablets to relieve pain in opioid-tolerant patients severe enough to require around-the-clock pain relief for a long period of time. Kindly do not use Hydromorphone ER capsules and tablets if you need pain medicine for just a short time, such as when recovering from surgery. Do not use this medicine to relieve mild pain. Do not use this medicine to treat pain that you only have once in a while or “as needed”. Typically, long-term use is only recommended for pain due to cancer.

Medical use of Hydromorphone ER

This medication may be used by mouth or by injection into a vein, muscle, or under the skin. Its effects generally begin within half an hour and last for up to five hours. Take Hydromorphone Extended-Release by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day, not as needed for sudden (breakthrough) pain.

Please read the Complete Medication Guide if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your doctor before you start taking this product and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions regarding the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

If you suddenly stop this medication, it may cause withdrawal, especially if you have used it for a long time or in high doses. Then, to prevent withdrawal, your doctor may lower your dose slowly. You must tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you have any withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, mental/mood changes (including anxiety, trouble sleeping, thoughts of suicide), watering eyes, runny nose, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, muscle aches, or sudden changes in behavior.

Hydromorphone side effects

Negative effects of Hydromorphone are similar to those of other potent opioid analgesics, such as morphine and heroin. And its major hazards include dose-related respiratory depression, urinary retention, bronchospasm, and sometimes, circulatory depression.

Like more common side effects we have lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, itching, constipation, nausea, vomiting, headache, perspiration, and hallucinations. These symptoms are common in ambulatory patients and in those not experiencing severe pain.

If you want to prevent constipation, eat dietary fiber, drink enough water, and exercise. You may also need to take a laxative. Ask your pharmacist which type of laxative is right for you.

Please before taking this medicaton, kindly tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Hydromorphone; or to other opioid pain medications (such as hydrocodone, morphine); or if you have any other allergies. Hydromorphone may contain inactive ingredients (such as sulfites), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Immediatly dial police’s number or emmergencies if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, give them naloxone if available, then. If the person is awake and has no symptoms, call a poison control center right away.
