What is Oxymorphone ER?

Oxymorphone ER is a semisynthetic narcotic analgesic. Oxymorphone ER is an opioid analgesic with actions and uses similar to those of morphine. It doesn’t have cough suppressant activity and it is related to hydromorphone and other opiates. It affects the central nervous system and smooth muscles by activation of specific opiate receptors.  Opioids are substances that act on opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects.

For any chronic treatment of pain, clinicians should only consider long term use if there is significant clinical benefits to the patient’s therapy that outweigh the risks.

Oxymorphone ER oral dosage

The following dosing recommendations can only be considered suggested approaches to what is actually a series of clinical decisions over time; each patient should be managed individually.


  • Usual Adult Dose for Pain

Use as first Opioid Analgesic:
-Initial dose: 10 to 20 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain
Maximum initial dose: 20 mg

  • Usual Adult Dose for Chronic Pain

Use as the First Opioid Analgesic or for those who are NOT Opioid Tolerant: Initial dose: Extended-release tablets: 5 mg orally every 12 hours.

Tablet, Oral, as hydrochloride: 5 mg; 10 mg

Oxymorphone ER Side Effects

Commonly its side effects include: constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, fever, headache, nausea, pruritus, and vomiting. Other side effects include: insomnia, diarrhea, xerostomia, and diaphoresis. Along with its needed effects, It may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

In order to prevent constipation, eat dietary fiber, drink enough water, and exercise. You may also need to take a laxative. You must always ask your pharmacist or doctor which type of laxative is right for you.

In the same manner to reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. Sometimes a soft mass that looks like the tablet may appear in your stool. This effect is harmless because your body has already absorbed the medication.

The most important thing that you have to remember is that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
